The sound of the Sun

Prominence activity summed from
October 2024 to January 2025

Seen above is the Sun's prominence activity during the 2024/2025 Solar Maximim
recorded over 4 months and combined into one image

The data was transformed from is normal circular format (i.e prominences around the solar limb)
to a rectangular format which was additionally reflected
and stretched vertically along the now linear post-transform solar limb.

The result has a striking similarlty to an audio oscillogram.

An oscillogram is a visual representation of sound data
which depicts the relationship between time and amplitude
and is commonly used in audio editing software.

This inspired converting the image data above
into an audio representation using some Python code .

The buzzes and clicks present in the raw data were softened using
a vocoder audio filter , originally developed to aid telephone transmissions
(which historically have been effected by powerful solar outbursts)

Vocoders are now typically used in electronic/popular music.

First popularized by artists like Stevie Wonder and Kraftwerk.
and famously used by Pink Floyd on Animals and
& Earth Wind and Fire's  "Let's groove tonight" )

As to whether data from our Sun ever makes a top-40 tune...who knows? :)
