The above image is of the Sun, our closest Star in Hydrogen-Alpha light, showing a little unusual activity.

The Melbourne-Sydney air route is the 3rd busiest air-route (based on aircraft movements) on the planet..

ATC instruct arriving traffic into Sydney to follow Standard Instrument Arrivals or "STARS"

which, for traffic from the South and West, is typically the Rivet 2 STAR (pictured below)

With a low Sun in mid winter, occasionally these aircraft can be seen transiting the sun when viewed from the Photographer's observatory

(the white dome seen at bottom right in the image above)

The solar image was taken a day before the winter solstice in 2015 (in the Southern Hemisphere)
